UGM supports family of patient who died after alleged mocking by resident doctor

Gadjah Mada University's Faculty of Medicine, Public Health, and Nursing (FK-KMK UGM) is offering support to the family of a patient who passed away after allegedly being the subject of unsympathetic remarks by a resident doctor. The incident gained public attention after the patient's account on the social media platform Threads became a target of criticism, including from the resident doctor in question.

Dean of FK-KMK UGM, Yodi Mahendradhata, stated that the faculty is undertaking a thorough investigation. They are coordinating with various stakeholders to ensure the examination process is objective, transparent, and fair to all parties involved. The faculty is also providing a channel for communication with the deceased patient's family to receive input and facilitate a professional and humane resolution.

FK-KMK UGM has reaffirmed its commitment to fostering a safe, inclusive, and dignified educational and healthcare environment that upholds humanitarian values and professional ethics. The faculty has pledged to take firm action against any violations, including ethical breaches, professional misconduct, bullying, violence, harassment, or abuse of power, in accordance with applicable regulations. They will impose sanctions if the investigation confirms any wrongdoing.

In addition to disciplinary actions, UGM plans a comprehensive review of its clinical education system. This includes strengthening supervision, professional development, communication skills training, and reinforcing ethics education, patient-centered care, and empathy within its programs. The university expressed its deepest condolences to the patient's family and apologized for any public concern or loss of trust resulting from the incident.
