Uğur Mumcu Family to Meet Justice Minister Over Assassination Case

The family of slain Turkish journalist Uğur Mumcu is set to meet with Justice Minister Akın Gürlek on August 6, a date confirmed after the family's request for an audience regarding the 1993 assassination. This meeting comes after the family issued a public statement demanding clarity on the judicial process and expressing their ongoing pursuit of justice.

Mumcu's family has consistently called for a thorough investigation that extends beyond the direct perpetrators to include those who orchestrated, aided, or protected the assassins, as well as any international connections. While convictions have been secured against Ferhan Özmen and Necdet Yüksel for their roles in the bombing, the case remains open due to the fugitive status of Oğuz Demir, accused of placing the bomb.

The family's statement highlighted their expectation that the Justice Ministry would facilitate Demir's apprehension and extradition, noting a lack of concrete progress despite previous efforts. They also expressed concern over recent statements suggesting the Mumcu case was under separate review by the ministry, emphasizing that the judicial proceedings are still active in court. The family seeks direct engagement with the minister to address their anxieties and ensure all aspects of the assassination are brought to light.
