UK: 19-year-old police officer killed when struck by car at crash scene

A 19-year-old police constable, Jess Turnbull, has died after being struck by a car while on duty in the UK. She had joined Northumbria Police in September and succumbed to her injuries in the hospital on Wednesday, surrounded by her family.

Turnbull was responding to a two-vehicle collision on the A189 near Cramlington, Northumberland, late Monday evening. While outside her patrol car to assess the scene, she was hit by a black Mercedes CLC, which was not connected to the initial accident.

A 73-year-old man was initially arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving. He was taken to the hospital and later released on bail, only to be re-arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He has since been released on bail again.

Northumbria Police Chief Constable Vanessa Jardine paid tribute to the young officer, stating, "This is an incredibly tragic incident where Jess lost her life on duty, serving and protecting our communities. Policing is a family, and we are mourning the loss of not only a colleague and friend but a member of our own family."

Jardine emphasized that Turnbull had "so much to look forward to in her career and life" and made "the ultimate sacrifice, which will never be forgotten." The police are appealing for witnesses and dashcam footage. PC Turnbull is the first Northumbria Police officer to die on duty since 2006.
