UK Appoints Gill Lever as New Ambassador to Zimbabwe

Veteran diplomat Gill Lever OBE will become the United Kingdom's new Ambassador to Zimbabwe in September 2026, succeeding Peter Vowles. The UK government announced the appointment, highlighting Lever's extensive career spanning over three decades.

Lever brings a wealth of international experience, having served in senior positions across Africa, Asia, and Europe. Most recently, she was the Deputy High Commissioner in Abuja, Nigeria, from 2023 to 2026. Prior to that, she served as Deputy Head of Mission in Juba, South Sudan, between 2022 and 2023. Her earlier postings include significant roles in Japan, Romania, India, and Vietnam, where she led initiatives such as the Hue Help Drowning Prevention Programme.

Her diplomatic journey began in 1989 with the UK's Foreign and Commonwealth Office. Lever's diverse experience includes heading the UK's Overseas Health and Welfare programme and working within the United Nations Department. Her appointment comes at a time when both the United Kingdom and Zimbabwe are focused on enhancing their diplomatic, trade, development, and investment ties, aiming to bolster bilateral relations.
