UK PM calls for reflection after Cambridge professor's death amid harassment claims

The UK is grappling with the tragic death of Jason Arday, a 41-year-old Cambridge professor, who was found dead nine days after resigning from his posts. Arday, who became the youngest Black professor at Cambridge in 2023, had stepped down following investigations into allegations of racism and academic misconduct, including claims of plagiarism and embellishing his achievements.

His family released a statement asserting that Arday had been subjected to a "sustained campaign of harassment" for over three years. They described him as a "gentle soul" who always sought the good in others, emphasizing his vulnerability, particularly as he had been diagnosed with autism. Arday himself had claimed to be the target of a "racially motivated" campaign.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, speaking to reporters, called for a period of "reflection" rather than hasty conclusions. "This is a tragedy in so many ways, but particularly for those who knew Jason. This is a time for reflection... reflection on how it came to this," Sunak stated. The scandal gained traction last month, fueled by media reports and accusations from some academics.

However, Weyman Bennett, coordinator for Stand Up to Racism, attributed Arday's death to a "racist witch hunt" orchestrated by right-wing media, politicians, and the far-right. Arday's resignation letter, dated August 5, described his departure as the "only way" to end a "difficult period," but he stressed it should not be misconstrued as an admission of guilt regarding the narratives spread about him. Police are investigating the death, which they are currently treating as unexplained but not suspicious, as they prepare a file for the coroner.
