UK Prime Minister to Host French President Macron in London

British Prime Minister Andy Burnham is set to host French President Emmanuel Macron in London next week, marking a significant diplomatic engagement for the new leader. This visit will be the first by an EU head of state since Burnham assumed office on July 20, succeeding Keir Starmer.

The meeting takes place just days before the highly anticipated Bayeux Tapestry exhibition opens at the British Museum on September 10. Macron played a crucial role in arranging the loan of the 11th-century artwork, which is visiting Britain for the first time in over 900 years. He hailed the agreement as a celebration of Franco-British relations.

Relations between London and European capitals have been strained since Brexit. However, recent UK governments have sought to rebuild ties. Starmer, who came to power in July 2024, had pledged to improve relations with the EU and had made progress, including a defense and trade pact in May 2025 and an agreement for the UK to rejoin the Erasmus student exchange program from 2027. A planned UK-EU summit was postponed following Starmer's resignation.

Burnham, who has so far hosted only Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at Downing Street, is perceived as prioritizing domestic affairs. However, his recent trip to Kyiv, his first foreign visit, saw him co-chairing a meeting of Ukraine's allies with Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. Traveling to Ukraine, Burnham met with European Council President Antonio Costa on the train, reportedly stating that the UK must more boldly pursue rapprochement with the bloc. Downing Street confirmed the postponed summit will occur later this year.
