UKMTO Reports Two Tanker Incidents Off Oman

Two tankers experienced maritime incidents off the coast of Oman, according to reports from the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO). The first incident involved a vessel being struck by an unknown projectile approximately 11 nautical miles northeast of Lima, Oman. The impact damaged the tanker's engine room, rendering it disabled and not under command. Fortunately, there were no reported casualties or environmental damage from this event.

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) said on Saturday it had received reports of two maritime incidents off Oman, including one in which a tanker was struck by an unknown projectile.

Later, UKMTO received a second report of an incident occurring 21 nautical miles northeast of Khasab, Oman. The master of a tanker in this area observed a large splash and an explosion in close proximity to their vessel. No damage was reported in connection with this second incident.

There were no reported casualties nor environmental impact, it added.

Both Lima and Khasab are situated on Oman's Musandam Peninsula, a location at the entrance to the Strait of Hormuz. This strait is a critical global shipping chokepoint, facilitating the passage of roughly one-fifth of the world's oil consumption. Shipping traffic through the Strait of Hormuz has faced increased risks recently, with multiple security incidents reported and some shipowners implementing additional safety measures amid heightened tensions between Iran and the United States.
