Ukraine, 9 European nations form coalition for integrated ballistic missile defense

Amid escalating concerns over Russian military capabilities, Ukraine and nine European countries have launched a new coalition to develop a unified ballistic missile defense system. The initiative, announced in Paris, aims to bolster European security against the increasing threat of Russian ballistic missile attacks, which have been a constant reality for Ukraine over the past four years. The participating nations – Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, and the United Kingdom – emphasized the growing danger posed by ballistic missiles, noting they are significantly harder to intercept than cruise missiles or drones. "We believe that Europe's protection requires a comprehensive solution in the form of an integrated missile defense architecture to prevent and neutralize future missile threats," stated the coalition. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed optimism that the partnership could lead to the development of a low-cost, mass-producible ballistic missile defense system within approximately 12 months. This system is intended not only to protect European nations but also to be available for export to other countries facing similar threats. The coalition's formation coincides with heightened military pressure from Russia, with President Vladimir Putin vowing a significantly stronger response to any Ukrainian attacks on Russian territory.
