Ukraine drone strike on Russian oil hub kills 13, injures 78

Ukraine's long-range drones struck a Russian oil hub deep within Russian territory on January 10, causing significant casualties. The attack in Nizhnekamsk, Tatarstan, killed 13 people and injured 78, marking one of the most severe incidents within Russia since the full-scale invasion began over four years ago.

The Ukrainian military confirmed drones hit an oil refinery in Nizhnekamsk, a city of 240,000 located approximately 1,200 kilometers east of the Ukrainian border. The city hosts two refineries and a petrochemical plant. This strike is part of a broader Ukrainian strategy to target Russia's energy infrastructure, aiming to reduce its refining capacity, create fuel shortages, and sow public unease.

Recent Ukrainian drone attacks have increasingly focused on Russian oil facilities. Previously, deadly attacks within Russia were mostly concentrated in the border region of Belgorod Oblast. In December 2023, shelling in Belgorod city killed 25 people, and five months later, a partial building collapse in the same city after an attack resulted in at least 13 deaths.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine is attempting to compel Russian President Vladimir Putin to negotiate an end to the invasion. He asserted that Russia's actions would increasingly be felt on its own soil, implying that Russia's continued aggression is the sole reason the war persists. Meanwhile, Russia's Foreign Ministry called on governments and international organizations to condemn Ukraine's actions. The United Nations, however, noted Russia's frequent aerial attacks on Ukraine, which have caused thousands of civilian casualties.
