Ukraine Investigates Former U.S. Ambassador for Illicit Enrichment

Olga Stefanishina, Ukraine's former ambassador to the United States, is facing an investigation for illicit enrichment, according to Ukraine's National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU). The probe comes shortly after President Volodymyr Zelenskyy dismissed her from her diplomatic post, citing "personal reasons."

The NABU suspects Stefanishina, who also served as deputy prime minister from 2020 to 2025, of illegally accumulating assets valued at approximately 13.9 million hryvnias (about $270,000). Investigators allege that her legal income does not adequately explain the numerous luxury properties and a Mercedes-Benz GLC 220 registered under the names of friends and family. Reports also suggest she was negotiating the purchase of a $550,000 house.

As a precautionary measure, Stefanishina has been ordered to post a bail of six million hryvnias ($116,000). She has publicly denied the accusations through her Facebook account, asserting her innocence and noting that her name has appeared in investigations before.

Stefanishina's tenure as ambassador lasted less than a year, having replaced Oksana Markarova on August 27, 2025. Her time in the role coincided with efforts to maintain U.S. support during the Trump administration. Her dismissal and the subsequent investigation occur amidst a significant government and military reshuffle in Ukraine, including the appointment of a new prime minister and heads of key security agencies.
