Ukraine orders child-families to evacuate Kramatorsk amid intensifying Russian attacks

Ukrainian officials have issued a mandatory evacuation order for hundreds of families with children from the eastern city of Kramatorsk, citing the escalating threat from Russian military advances. The city, which once housed around 200,000 residents before the full-scale invasion in February 2022, is a critical frontline stronghold for Ukrainian forces.

Kramatorsk is situated within what is known as the "fortress belt," a heavily fortified defensive line that Ukraine has maintained against Russian advances since 2014. Beyond this line lies flat terrain with few natural obstacles, making it vulnerable to rapid Russian advances should the defenses be breached. The current proximity of Russian forces, reportedly less than 20 kilometers from the city's eastern outskirts, underscores the urgency of the situation.

Donetsk regional governor Vadym Filasjkin described the decision as "difficult, but necessary." He emphasized that the deteriorating security situation makes it "unacceptable to allow children to be under the constant threat of Russian attacks." According to the French news agency AFP, the forced evacuation will affect a total of 525 children and their guardians from Kramatorsk and its surrounding areas. This measure reflects the intense fighting and strategic importance of eastern Ukraine in the ongoing conflict.
