Ukraine's Ambassador to Poland, Vasyl Bodnar, Returns for Potential Deputy Foreign Minister Role

Ukraine's Ambassador to Poland, Vasyl Bodnar, is set to conclude his mission in Warsaw and return to Ukraine. Sources indicate he is being considered for a role as deputy foreign minister, a position he has held previously.

Bodnar's tenure in Poland followed his ambassadorship in Turkey, where he served from 2021 to 2024. Prior to that, he was Ukraine's deputy foreign minister from 2017 to 2021. His appointment as ambassador to Poland was in 2024.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reportedly announced the potential appointments during a meeting with heads of Ukrainian diplomatic missions in Kyiv. The news agency Interfax-Ukraine cited Zelenskyy's remarks regarding Bodnar and the Ambassador to the Czech Republic, Vasyl Zwarych, who may also be appointed as deputy foreign ministers.

Before Bodnar, Vasyl Zwarych served as Ukraine's ambassador to Poland from June 2022 to July 2024. He then took up his post as ambassador to the Czech Republic. Among the candidates being considered to succeed Bodnar in Poland are Iryna Vereshchuk, deputy head of the President of Ukraine's Office, and Oleksandr Mischenko, the current deputy head of Ukraine's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
