Modernist Icon Loses Battle to Trump: 'Beautiful Building, Terrible Airport'

A controversial proposal by the U.S. Department of Transportation to redesign the departures hall at Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) has sparked debate over the future of its iconic modernist terminal. The ambitious project aims to enhance passenger movement and expand available space, but carries a staggering estimated cost of $22.5 billion.

The current terminal, designed by the renowned Finnish-American architect Eero Saarinen and opened in 1962, is a celebrated example of mid-century modernism. Saarinen himself considered it his most successful work. However, for years, the airport's layout has been criticized for complicating passenger navigation throughout the complex.

In response, the Department of Transportation launched a design competition last December for the modernization of the modernist hall. Former President Donald Trump had previously described the building as "a beautiful building, but a terrible airport," highlighting the need for significant upgrades. The competition considered concepts that ranged from preserving the existing Saarinen terminal to complete replacement.

While the administration announced that projects were selected after a thorough review of over 30 proposals from leading architects worldwide, no specific firms have been named. United Airlines, a key partner in the modernization, has released renderings suggesting the original Saarinen structure will be retained, topped by an expanded glass enclosure with a streamlined roof. The plan also involves replacing terminals C and D with new buildings, adding a hotel, restaurants, shops, and a new United Airlines lounge. Trump also announced plans for the "world's largest garage" as part of the project.

This extensive renovation aligns with the Trump administration's broader "Make D.C. Great Again" initiative aimed at modernizing Washington's infrastructure. However, the project's scale and cost, coupled with the debate over preserving Saarinen's architectural legacy, make it a focal point of discussion.
