Ukraine's Ambassador Urges US to Reinstate Russian Oil Sanctions

Olga Stefanishyna, Ukraine's ambassador to the United States, has issued a strong call for Washington to reinstate sanctions on Russian oil and petroleum products. In a message posted on social media, Stefanishyna emphasized that it is unacceptable for Moscow to benefit from the actions of its ally, Iran. She urged the U.S. administration to reimpose the previously applied sanctions on Russian energy carriers.

The ambassador stated that it is in the common interest to curb the financial resources Russia uses to fund its military operations in Ukraine and to support adversaries of the United States. She warned that if Moscow perceives its destabilizing actions and war activities as profitable, new global tensions could soon emerge.

Stefanishyna highlighted that a Russian official had already referred to the easing of oil sanctions as cooperation. Meanwhile, the United States has issued a new license permitting the transport and sale of Russian crude oil and petroleum products that were loaded onto ships before April 17.

This plea from Kyiv underscores the ongoing economic warfare and its direct impact on Ukraine's ability to defend itself. While Western nations have imposed significant sanctions, Ukraine consistently pushes for more stringent measures, viewing any financial lifeline to Moscow as a direct impediment to its sovereignty and security. The ambassador's direct appeal to the U.S. administration reflects Ukraine's strategic reliance on American support and its persistent efforts to isolate Russia economically.
