Ukraine's Ex-Commander-in-Chief Says Troops Recaptured 700 Sq Km This Year

Oleksandr Syrskyi, recently dismissed as Ukraine's Commander-in-Chief, reported that Ukrainian forces have reclaimed 700 square kilometers of territory from Russian troops in the current year. In his farewell statement on the Telegram messaging platform, Syrskyi declared that the army he is handing over to his successor is equipped for both defensive and offensive operations.

Syrskyi assumed command of the armed forces at the beginning of 2024. He had previously played a significant role in the early stages of the war in 2022, particularly in the defense and counteroffensive operations that regained territory in the northeastern Kharkiv region. However, his leadership style, characterized by determination but a lack of flexibility, led to criticism from some quarters regarding unnecessary sacrifices on the battlefield.

During his command, Syrskyi highlighted several achievements, including thwarting Russian advances in Kharkiv and leading raids into Russia's Kursk region in 2024. His statement underscores the ongoing conflict and the strategic shifts occurring within Ukraine's military leadership.
