Ukraine's Front Line Becomes 'Drone Line' in Tactical Revolution

The eastern front in Ukraine has evolved into a "drone line," where infantry shelters underground and battles are increasingly dictated by unmanned aerial vehicles operated from miles away. In Kostiantynivka, a crucial city within the Donbas "fortress belt," Ukraine employs a sophisticated network of drones, linked by Starlink, to impede Russian advances and preserve soldiers' lives.

This tactical revolution, spearheaded by former Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov, is proving vital in the defense of the region's remaining strongholds. Kostiantynivka, once known as the "glass capital" of the Soviet Union, now lies in ruins, its streets deserted and factories abandoned due to relentless artillery, missile, and bomb attacks.

"It looks like a deserted city, but it's not," says a 42-year-old Ukrainian drone pilot, whose identity remains partially concealed. "Our people are there. The Russians are there. No one dares to show themselves. This is what war looks like now." Russian infiltration teams and Ukrainian defenders engage in a desperate struggle amidst the rubble, their movements meticulously mapped by surveillance drones.

Daily Mail gained rare access to the "Seraphymy" Unmanned Systems Battalion, part of the 104th Independent Territorial Defense Brigade in Donetsk. Here, the battle for Kostiantynivka, one of four cities forming Ukraine's defensive "fortress belt" in the Donbas, was documented. While some anticipate Kostiantynivka's fall, Ukraine's innovative drone warfare offers a potential model for repelling Russian forces from other key cities, possibly pushing Russia toward seeking peace.
