Ukraine seeks new ambassador to US as key post remains vacant

Ukraine is actively searching for a new ambassador to the United States, a pivotal diplomatic role that has remained vacant for several weeks. The position became open following the departure of the previous ambassador amid a corruption investigation.

Ukraine needs someone who will be liked by the American public, appear on television, and meet with people from think tanks.

Former Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba has emerged as a leading candidate for the post. Kuleba, who served as Ukraine's youngest foreign minister from March 2020 until September 2024, became a recognizable figure internationally, particularly after Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022. His extensive experience in international diplomacy, including frequent appeals to Western governments for military aid, is seen as a key qualification for the Washington posting.

However, it remains uncertain whether Kuleba himself wishes to take on the role. Sources suggest he may prefer to remain in Kyiv. Another potential candidate being considered by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's administration is Pavlo Kyrylenko, the deputy head of the President's Office. Kyrylenko has gained prominence for his coordination between the presidential administration and Ukraine's military leadership and has previously received positive remarks from U.S. President Donald Trump.
