Ukraine Seeks New Grain Corridors Through Poland and Neighbors

Ukraine is actively seeking alternative export routes for its grain, engaging in consultations with neighboring countries such as Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Hungary, and Moldova. The initiative comes after Russia's attacks on merchant vessels effectively blocked the crucial Black Sea grain corridor, disrupting Ukraine's ability to export its agricultural products.

"Russia's terror has effectively blocked the grain corridor, or the maritime route for transporting Ukrainian production abroad," stated Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha. "We have already appealed to our partners and allies to help us unblock maritime exports and support pressure on Moscow."

Sybiha explained that the consultations focus on expanding infrastructure and establishing suitable conditions to facilitate the transport of Ukrainian grain to third-country markets. "We are currently holding intensive consultations with all our neighbors... on how to expand infrastructure and create appropriate conditions to help Ukraine transport grain to third-country markets. I would like to emphasize that we are talking about transit through these countries," he added.

These efforts are reminiscent of the "solidarity corridors" established in May 2022 by the EU, Ukraine, and Moldova. These land-based routes allowed Ukraine to export agricultural products and import necessary goods. The EU had suspended import duties and quotas on all Ukrainian exports until June 2025 to support the country's economy, a move that had previously sparked protests from farmers in some EU member states. The current discussions aim to revive and adapt these solutions, potentially utilizing the ports of neighboring countries to ensure Ukrainian grain reaches global markets.
