Ukraine War: Europe Plans Separate Peace Talks Amid US Uncertainty

France, Germany, and the United Kingdom are proactively seeking to establish a distinct European negotiation format for the war in Ukraine. This initiative stems from concerns that the United States might withdraw from the process, leaving Europe to manage the conflict's diplomatic resolution independently.

European diplomats are prioritizing the continent's significant role in crucial diplomatic decisions. Their objective is to prevent any future agreements concerning Ukraine from being unilaterally decided by Washington and Moscow. While acknowledging the indispensable involvement of the US, these European powers are determined to maintain their influence and avoid being marginalized in the peace process.

Germany and France are leading the charge in shaping a unified European stance. The UK, having recently changed its government, is proceeding with caution, mindful of potential repercussions on its relationship with the US President. European officials currently see no indication that Russian President Vladimir Putin is prepared for serious negotiations.

Despite the hypothetical nature of these discussions, as stated by the UK's Foreign Ministry, European countries view the end of the war in Ukraine and future relations with Russia as paramount. They are unwilling to cede control of these critical issues to an unpredictable US administration. The goal is to prevent a scenario where Washington and Moscow strike a deal that disregards the positions of their European allies.

Discussions also involve consulting with Poland, Italy, and Nordic countries, as well as the European Union. However, some nations, particularly the Baltic states and Hungary, worry that France and Germany might not adequately consider their security interests.
