Ukrainian Parliament Speaker visits Iceland's Althingi

Ruslan Stefanchuk, the Speaker of Ukraine's Verkhovna Rada, visited Iceland's parliament, the Althingi, for high-level discussions centered on the ongoing conflict in his homeland. He met with Althingi Speaker Þórunn Sveinbjarnadóttir at the Althingi building, where the state of the war in Ukraine dominated the agenda.

During their meeting, Stefanchuk and Sveinbjarnadóttir also addressed the daily challenges faced by Ukrainians during wartime, with a particular focus on the impact on children. The conversation touched upon the escalating Russian attacks targeting civilian infrastructure and populations across Ukraine, highlighting the severe humanitarian consequences.

Stefanchuk is also scheduled to attend a meeting of the Speakers of the Nordic and Baltic parliaments. In a significant gesture, he presented state awards from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to Sveinbjarnadóttir and former Althingi Speaker Birgir Ármannsson. These awards, the Order of Merit, 2nd Class, recognized their substantial contributions to enhancing cooperation between the two nations, supporting Ukraine's sovereignty, and upholding its territorial integrity.

The recognition specifically cited their efforts in promoting the inviolability of Ukraine's borders. The meeting underscored Iceland's continued support for Ukraine amidst the protracted conflict and highlighted the diplomatic efforts to maintain international solidarity.
