UMaT Installs Professor Bernard Kumi-Boateng as Fourth Vice-Chancellor

Professor Bernard Kumi-Boateng has officially assumed office as the fourth Vice-Chancellor of the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) in Tarkwa. His appointment, effective August 1, 2026, was formalized during an investiture ceremony where he was sworn in by the University Council Chairperson, Professor Mrs. Goski Alabi.

At 47, Professor Kumi-Boateng makes history as the youngest professor at UMaT and the first alumnus of the university to be appointed to its highest academic leadership role. A full Professor of Geomatic Engineering, his ascension marks a significant milestone for the institution.

In his acceptance speech, Professor Kumi-Boateng outlined his vision for UMaT, emphasizing a "transformation agenda" to position the university as the "MIT of Africa." He plans to achieve this through a four-year strategic plan, focusing on alignment with existing strategies rather than disruption. His administration will prioritize academic excellence, which he stated must be grounded in professionalism, discipline, integrity, mutual respect, and good character.

Addressing the challenge of financial sustainability, Professor Kumi-Boateng noted UMaT's over-reliance on government funding, which has resulted in an average funding shortfall of 25% between 2021 and 2025. His strategy involves a holistic and accountable financial management approach, including the commercialization of research, consultancy services, and university assets like its demonstration mine and waterfall. He aims to "turn ideas into income for a more resilient university" over the next four years.

Professor Kumi-Boateng also acknowledged infrastructure constraints, such as inadequate laboratories, overcrowded lecture halls, and housing deficits. He expressed optimism that the coming years will witness significant investment in infrastructure to support the university's growing ambitions and enhance the student experience.
