UMJ’s 13th Muhammadiyah Day Strengthens Scholarship and Spirituality to Build Civilization

Universitas Muhammadiyah Jakarta’s 13th Hari Bermuhammadiyah centered on a message that knowledge and spirituality must advance together if Muhammadiyah is to contribute to global civilization.

Held at the KH Ahmad Azhar Basyir Auditorium in UMJ’s Cendekia Building, the event carried the theme “The Urgency of Balancing Scholarship and Spirituality in Building Global Civilization.” The gathering aimed to reinforce Muhammadiyah values and encourage members of the organization to contribute to society, the nation and the state.

More importantly, it is about becoming a more trustworthy and useful person, and serving the nation and the state.

The program opened with remarks from Gen. (Ret.) Dudung Abdurachman, head of Indonesia’s Presidential Staff Office. Dudung said he was grateful to be part of Muhammadiyah and described that membership as a trust that must be honored through service. “More importantly, it is about becoming a more trustworthy and useful person, and serving the nation and the state,” he said.

This is part of our shared responsibility to continue building and contributing to Muhammadiyah.

Dudung also emphasized that official positions are temporary. A person’s value, he said, is shown through the actions and service carried out while entrusted with responsibility. He expressed hope that Muhammadiyah would continue making tangible contributions and bringing benefits to society and the nation.

UMJ Rector Ma’mun Murod Al-Barbasy praised the event as a way to strengthen scholarly and spiritual commitment within Muhammadiyah. He said it also provided a space to deepen solidarity and encourage the university community to contribute to the organization and society. Abdul Mu’ti, chairman of UMJ’s Supervisory Board, said Muhammadiyah should be more than an organizational identity. Its values should shape people’s thinking, behavior and concrete actions. Citing the principle “Innamal a’malu binniat, every deed depends on its intention,” he said meaningful change must begin with good intentions and a constructive mindset, then take shape through actions directed toward the public good.
