UMY aims for all students to read and write the Quran

Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta says academic achievement will not be its only focus. The university also wants students to develop Islamic knowledge and character that they can apply in daily life.

The commitment was discussed during a meeting between the university and families of new students in Yogyakarta. Siti Barikah, whose child entered the Islamic Economics program, asked how UMY applies Islamic values during the education process.

Prof. Faris Al-Fadhat, the vice rector responsible for university development and Al-Islam and Muhammadiyah studies, said Islamic development begins when students are admitted. New students take a Quran reading and writing test to assess their abilities.

The results showed that about 7.2% were in the highest proficiency category, while 12.9% were classified as fluent. About 80% still need assistance. “It is our task to guide your children until graduation. Over the next four years, we will work to ensure that 100% of students can read and write the Quran,” Faris said.

The program continues through campus orientation, basic Islamic studies and Al-Islam and Muhammadiyah education. Students also receive practical guidance in Quran reading, ablution and prayer. Their abilities will be assessed again before graduation. Medical students, particularly men, are also guided to lead prayers and deliver sermons.
