UN allocates $30.5 million more for Congo Ebola outbreak, citing rapid spread

The United Nations is boosting its response to the escalating Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo and surrounding nations with an additional $30.5 million from its Central Emergency Response Fund. This funding aims to address what the UN describes as the "fastest-growing" Ebola epidemic ever recorded.

The newly allocated funds add to the $24 million previously directed to the DRC, Uganda, South Sudan, and Burundi. Fletcher also announced the deployment of 20 additional frontline personnel.

An emergency meeting of the UN's Inter-Agency Standing Committee highlighted the need for a "rapid, broad-based, and solidary" response. The plan focuses on saving lives by doubling safe burial teams, tripling treatment capacity, enhancing contact tracing, and deploying more experienced managers. "More than 2,000 people have already died. Many more are in danger. The world must wake up and take action," Fletcher urged.

The DRC government reported 2,184 deaths and 4,665 confirmed cases as of August 12. The current fatality rate stands at 46.8%. While 634 patients remain hospitalized and 965 have recovered, the outbreak continues to spread, affecting six provinces. The UN emphasizes that swift and comprehensive action is critical to prevent the virus from spreading further.
