UN backs updated protocol to investigate disappearances in Mexico

The UN Human Rights Office in Mexico (ONU-DH) has announced its participation in the National Conference on Justice Administration's update of the Homologated Investigation Protocol for Forced Disappearances and Disappearances Committed by Private Individuals. This protocol is a key tool for investigating such crimes in Mexico.

The ONU-DH, in collaboration with the UN Population Fund (UNFPA), provided technical assistance to enhance the search for missing persons, human identification, and investigations into disappearances. The UN office celebrated the protocol's update, noting its technical accompaniment throughout the process as part of its cooperation with Mexican authorities on human rights matters.

The update was approved during the LIV Plenary Assembly of the National Conference on Justice Administration. This occurred amid persistent calls from prosecutors, international organizations, and family collectives for strengthened investigative and institutional coordination capacities to confront the country's disappearance crisis. The protocol aims to establish common criteria and procedures for authorities investigating forced disappearances and those committed by private individuals, thereby improving the effectiveness of inquiries and ensuring victims and their families access to truth and justice.
