Diver dies off Yucatán coast; second fatality this octopus season

A 49-year-old diver has died while working off the coast of Río Lagartos in Yucatán, Mexico. César Alexander Tun Pacheco experienced complications after emerging from the water more than 40 kilometers offshore. His colleagues attempted to assist him, but their efforts were unsuccessful, and he was pronounced dead.

This incident is the second diving fatality recorded during the current octopus fishing season in Yucatán. Just last Sunday, the body of 51-year-old Demetrio Chan May, also an octopus diver, was found floating at sea. May was a resident of Xbec, a community in the eastern part of Yucatán.

César Alexander Tun Pacheco was a well-regarded member of the community, serving as the president of the Sociedad Cooperativa de Producción Pesquera. His death is a significant loss, particularly for the fishing ports in eastern Yucatán where he was highly appreciated. The fatalities underscore the inherent dangers faced by those involved in the region's vital octopus fishing industry.
