UN General Assembly Declares 2028 International Year of Law

The United Nations General Assembly has officially designated 2028 as the International Year of Law. This resolution underscores the critical role international law plays in upholding global peace and security, fostering robust multilateral cooperation, and nurturing friendly relations among nations.

The declaration emphasizes that respect for and adherence to international law are fundamental to the effectiveness, predictability, and legitimacy of the current international system. Member states, UN system organizations, and other interested parties are encouraged to undertake relevant educational, scientific, and awareness-raising activities during 2028. The initiative also aims to promote peaceful dispute resolution, enhance international legal cooperation, and improve legal education worldwide.

A significant focus will be placed on engaging youth, the scientific community, legal professionals, and civil society institutions in advancing international law. In line with this, the General Assembly welcomed Turkmenistan's proposal to host a global forum on international law in December 2028. This forum is set to be a central event for the year, bringing together states, UN agencies, international organizations, academics, and civil society representatives.

The resolution serves as a call to action for a deeper understanding and application of international legal principles, recognizing their importance in addressing contemporary global challenges and building a more just and stable world order.
