UN reports highest daily Israeli shelling in Lebanon since June security deal

The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) reported a significant escalation on Wednesday, documenting 113 Israeli projectiles fired into southern Lebanon. This marks the highest single-day number of attacks recorded by the UN peacekeeping mission since a framework security agreement was reached between Lebanon and Israel in late June.

UNIFIL stated that peacekeepers continue to observe daily violations of Lebanese airspace and ground activities. The 113 projectiles launched by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) represent the highest figure registered by UNIFIL since June 21. The mission acknowledged that while overall violence has decreased substantially compared to earlier months, the general situation remains fragile.

The conflict in Lebanon erupted on March 2 after Hezbollah launched attacks against Israel, in response to a late February offensive by the U.S. and Israel against Iran. This led to over 4,300 deaths and displaced more than a million people. A brief ceasefire in mid-April paved the way for talks, resulting in the June 26 security agreement.

Despite ongoing talks, Israel continues to target Lebanese territory. On Thursday, the Lebanese Ministry of Health's Emergency Operations Center reported that eight civilians were injured in new Israeli attacks on Burj al Shamali. The National News Agency (ANN) also reported intensified Israeli attacks, particularly in the Tyre district, involving aerial and artillery bombardments. The Israeli military, in turn, confirmed the deaths of two of its soldiers in southern Lebanon.
