UN Rights Chief: Israel's Actions in Lebanon May Be War Crimes

Volker Türk, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, has stated that Israel's military operations in Lebanon have involved "large-scale violations" of international humanitarian law, with some actions potentially amounting to "war crimes." The High Commissioner made these remarks in Beirut at the conclusion of a two-day visit to Lebanon.

Türk's office has been documenting alleged violations since March 2, when Hezbollah became involved in the conflict. The ongoing hostilities have led to over 4,300 deaths and 12,200 injuries in Lebanon, including more than 135 healthcare workers and numerous journalists. The High Commissioner noted that despite an initial ceasefire announcement on April 17 and subsequent de-escalation talks, the Israeli army has continued to inflict casualties through airstrikes and ground operations.

During his visit, Türk observed the devastation in southern Lebanon, where he noted that entire villages have been destroyed or rendered uninhabitable by Israeli attacks. These attacks have impacted homes, schools, health centers, water distribution networks, electrical infrastructure, places of worship, and agricultural land. He expressed concern about the potential implications for civilian protection as the mandate of the UN peacekeeping mission in Lebanon (UNIFIL) is set to expire later this year.

Türk also highlighted that Israeli forces continue to occupy significant parts of southern Lebanese territory. He voiced concern that these practices, which have caused the displacement of approximately one million people, could constitute international crimes.
