Unachi: Absel Navarro proclaimed new rector, vows to review accreditations

Absel Navarro has officially received his proclamation as the new rector of the Autonomous University of Chiriquí (Unachi), marking the culmination of a democratic electoral process. Navarro expressed gratitude for the successful election and emphasized that his administration will focus on strengthening the university for all its stakeholders.

"I want to thank the Electoral Tribunal because democracy triumphed," Navarro stated, outlining his vision for Unachi to achieve greater national and international projection. His administration plans to prioritize academic rigor, research initiatives, and community outreach.

Upon taking office, Navarro faces immediate challenges, including the situation with payroll for faculty and staff, which has been impacted by questions surrounding last-minute accreditations. He has pledged to review these accreditations and address the issue promptly. "We are aware that we must make some corrections," he noted, referencing discussions with the Ministry of Education and the Comptroller General's Office.

Budgetary concerns are also at the forefront, with Navarro highlighting the need for approximately $100 million to fund necessary investment projects, an increase from the current recommended budget of around $80 million. The university is also navigating administrative complexities, including recent notifications of dismissal for 12 officials, a matter Navarro stated he will handle with respect for due process.

Navarro's formal inauguration is scheduled for Monday, August 31. The transition process has begun, with Navarro meeting with the interim rector to ensure a smooth handover of responsibilities. His administration aims to foster transparency and build confidence within the university community as it embarks on a new chapter.
