Union fears Reykjavik cuts will harm essential services

Reykjavik's city council is facing criticism from a labor union over proposed budget cuts that could impact essential public services and lead to job losses. Kári Sigurðsson, chairman of the Sameyki union, expressed concern that the council's "efficiency measures" might result in a reduction of core services provided to citizens.

Sigurðsson stated that his understanding was that essential services would not be cut, but he fears this may not be the case. He noted that even if staff are laid off, the tasks they perform will not disappear, suggesting a potential strain on remaining services or a shift in how work is managed.
