UNN Mass Communication program unbundled into five new courses

The University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN) is set to significantly restructure its Mass Communication department, following approval from the National Universities Commission (NUC). The department will be unbundled into five distinct undergraduate programs, effective from the 2026/2027 academic session.

The newly approved programs include B.Sc. degrees in Advertising, Broadcasting, Development Communication Studies, Journalism and Media Studies, and Public Relations. This strategic move aims to enhance specialization and cater to the evolving landscape of media and communication studies.

The NUC's approval came after a comprehensive resource verification exercise, where experts assessed the university's capacity to support the new programs. The commission emphasized that the approval strictly applies to full-time study modes, requiring further clearance for any part-time or postgraduate offerings.

Professor Michael Ukonu, Head of the Mass Communication Department, expressed gratitude for the support received, highlighting that this unbundling aligns with the university's vision for maintaining world-class standards and driving transformation. The initiative is expected to enrich the academic offerings and better prepare graduates for specialized roles in the communication industry.
