Unpredictable Storms: A Forecaster's Nightmare

Predicting the weather, particularly localized thunderstorms, presents a significant challenge for meteorologists, often described as a "nightmare" for forecasters. Branko Gregorčič, a meteorologist, partially agrees that accurately forecasting weather is becoming increasingly difficult amidst changing climate patterns.

Gregorčič explains that convective weather situations involving thunderstorms are, and will continue to be, a major hurdle for accurate prediction. He notes that forecasting larger weather systems, such as weather fronts and cyclones, is comparatively simpler. The development of storm clouds over the Po Valley during nighttime hours, for instance, poses a particular difficulty for both Slovenian and Italian meteorologists.

While acknowledging that weather prediction models are continuously improving, Gregorčič suggests that achieving complete predictability is still a long way off, if it ever happens. He points out that discrepancies between different forecasting models often make it hard to determine which scenario will ultimately materialize. "We will continue to fight with this, also with the help of artificial intelligence," Gregorčič stated.

Meanwhile, the Slovenian Environment Agency (Arso) has issued warnings for potential local storms, especially in the northeastern parts of the country, for the afternoon and evening. Additionally, a high risk of natural environment fires has been declared for the southern half of Slovenia. In contrast, Ljubljana is forecast to have sunny weather with minimal cloud cover and moderate temperatures for this time of year.
