Unregistered marriages, parental neglect cited as causes for late birth registrations in Malaysia

The National Registration Department (JPN) in Malaysia has identified unregistered marriages and parental procrastination as the main culprits behind a significant number of late birth registrations across the country. Between January 1 and July 15 this year, a total of 4,598 applications for late birth registrations were processed nationwide.

Datuk Badrul Hisham Alias, the Director-General of JPN, stated that most of these cases involve residents from rural areas or individuals who are less aware of the importance of registering births within the stipulated timeframe. He emphasized that each application is meticulously evaluated based on its facts, supporting documentation, and prevailing laws, clarifying that late applications are not automatically approved.

Badrul Hisham made these remarks after presenting birth certificates to eight children belonging to Zapni Abd. Wahab, 53, under the "Program Menyemai Kasih Rakyat" (MEKAR) initiative in Kampung Johal. He assured that JPN has no pending cases, as special meetings are held monthly to expedite all applications, including appeals. He stressed the critical importance of birth registration for citizens to access essential rights, including healthcare, education, and various government services, urging parents and guardians to adhere to the registration deadlines to prevent future difficulties.
