Updated abandoned land map: what to do to avoid overpaying land tax

Lithuania's Agricultural Data Center has released an updated spatial data set for abandoned farmlands, crucial for calculating the 2026 land tax. The data, reflecting the status as of July 1, 2026, is now available on the Land Resource Monitoring Information System (ŽISIS) and the "Geoportal.lt" portal.

"By updating the data on abandoned agricultural land areas, we aim to reflect the actual situation as accurately as possible," stated Gintautas Vasiliauskas. He emphasized the importance of landowners and users reporting any inaccuracies by December 1.

Vilnius district municipality has the largest area of abandoned farmland at 3,015 hectares. Molėtai, Trakai, Zarasai, and Utena districts follow, collectively accounting for nearly 10,000 hectares, about a third of the national total. Joniškis district has the smallest area at 24.2 hectares. The largest increases in abandoned land this year were observed in Vilnius, Trakai, and Elektrėnai municipalities.

The data was updated using Lithuania's digital orthophotographic map from 2025. Abandoned farmlands are defined as areas with woody vegetation, such as trees or shrubs, covering more than 10 ares. Such areas may be subject to a higher land tax rate.

Landowners and users are encouraged to check the updated map for accuracy. They should report discrepancies, such as incorrect area markings, cleared vegetation, or areas designated for other land types like swamps or unusable land. The deadline for reporting is December 1, after which tax calculations for 2026 will be finalized. Data can be verified via "Geoportal.lt," ŽISIS, the "Regia" information system, and the "NMA agro" mobile app.
