Urgent help requested to evacuate 6-year-old Awajún girl in critical condition after violence in Amazonas

An urgent plea for help has been issued by indigenous rights organizations and advocates in Amazonas, Peru, to evacuate a 6-year-old Awajún girl in critical condition. The child, who is a victim of sexual violence, suffers from severe physical complications that pose an imminent threat to her life. She is currently in the border district of El Cenepa, Condorcanqui province.

According to indigenous leader Rosmery Pioc Castro, the situation highlights severe neglect and logistical deficiencies. The severity of the girl's condition, marked by persistent hemorrhaging, only came to light when her mother sought help at a local health post on Saturday. The local health center lacks a blood bank and specialists needed for urgent transfusions to stabilize the child. Compounding the crisis, transportation vehicles and riverboats, both from the health sector and local government, are inoperable, preventing any ground or river transfer to larger towns like Santa María de Nieva or Bagua.

Given the extreme logistical isolation, civil representatives have urgently coordinated with national bodies, including the Ministry of Women and Vulnerable Populations, the Ombudsman's Office, and parliamentary members. They are pushing for the immediate deployment of a state helicopter or air transport, which is seen as the only viable option to save the child's life. Meanwhile, communal anger is directed at the alleged aggressor, identified as Darwin Chup Wasum, the girl's stepfather. He reportedly fled the medical center upon discovery and remains at large, prompting demands for his swift capture by local authorities and law enforcement.
