Uruapan Mayor Honors Slain Husband, Vows to Continue His Fight

Uruapan municipal president Grecia Quiroz has publicly commemorated her late husband, former mayor Carlos Manzo, nine months after his assassination. In a heartfelt message shared on social media, Quiroz remembered Manzo as a dedicated public servant who was "always devoted to his people."

"When a light shines too brightly, unfortunately, it dazzles and inconveniences many," Quiroz stated, alluding to the potential reasons behind her husband's murder. She affirmed her commitment to continuing the work Manzo began, aiming to create a better future for their children, family, and the citizens of Uruapan. "Not a single day will go by that we don't mention your name," she promised.

The investigation into Manzo's death has led to the arrest of 31 individuals. Authorities recently apprehended Ángel Ramón Álvarez Ayala, known as "R1" and identified as the leader of "Los Rs," a violent cell linked to the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG). "R1" is considered the intellectual author of the assassination, which is believed to have been motivated by Manzo's actions that provoked the cartel.

"Los Rs" operates in several municipalities in Michoacán and Jalisco, engaging in extortion, murder, and drug trafficking. The capture of "R1" marks a significant step in the ongoing efforts to bring those responsible for Manzo's murder to justice and dismantle the criminal organizations operating in the region.
