Widow of Temoac Mayor Linked to Aggravated Extortion; Police Chief Freed

Marisol Romero Zamora, the widow of the assassinated mayor of Temoac, Morelos, has been formally linked to an aggravated extortion case. A judge determined there was sufficient evidence to proceed against her, though she will remain in preventive detention.

In contrast, the municipal police chief, Geovany Emmanuel González, who was arrested for the same crime, was released due to a lack of evidence. The Public Ministry stated that the Prosecutor's Office for the Investigation of High-Impact Crimes (FIDAI) presented evidence showing Romero's active participation in extortion since July 2025. She is accused of physically assaulting and threatening victims to coerce them into paying large sums of money in exchange for their safety.

Romero Zamora is the daughter of Andrea Angelina Zamora Castilla, also known as "La Patrona," a former municipal treasurer of Temoac. Castilla was previously arrested in September 2025 with ten others, identified as members of the "Los Aparicio" and/or "Los Huazulco" cell. This group allegedly operated in Temoac and other municipalities in eastern Morelos, facing charges including aggravated express kidnapping, drug offenses, resisting arrest, and illegal firearm possession.

The FIDAI indicated that investigations into this criminal group will continue to dismantle their operations in the region, despite the release of the police chief. The case highlights ongoing security concerns and criminal activity in the area.
