Uruguay court upholds detention for ex-deputy Radiccioni on domestic violence charges, reduces term

An appeals court has decided to maintain pre-trial detention for former National Party deputy Javier Radiccioni, who faces charges of domestic violence against his ex-partner, prosecutor Eliana Travers. The court, however, granted the defense's request to reduce the detention period from 180 to 120 days.

Radiccioni was formally charged in February of this year. Following the charges, the National Party suspended him, stating the decision was for the "institutional safeguarding" of the party. The former legislator was subsequently barred from holding any political or institutional representation on behalf of the party.

According to information released by the Prosecutor's Office, Radiccioni was charged with "repeated crimes of domestic violence, one aggravated, in formal concurrence with a crime of aggravated personal injury, as the perpetrator." Police reports indicate the incident that led to the complaint occurred at a home in Montevideo's Carrasco neighborhood. A dispute over their nine-month-old son allegedly escalated, with Radiccioni reportedly throwing a glass at Travers' face, causing a cut on her lip.
