Uruguay: Driver Formalized for Fatal Crash Killing Two Youths; Family Protests Legal Process

In Maldonado, Uruguay, the wheels of justice are slowly turning following a tragic collision on Camino Los Arrayanes that claimed the lives of two young individuals, both just 18 years old. A 22-year-old man has been formally investigated for qualified culpable homicide, a serious charge reflecting the gravity of the incident that occurred on November 2, 2025.

The court has imposed stringent precautionary measures on the accused, including a fixed domicile, weekly reporting to the Piriápolis police station, a prohibition on driving, passport retention, and border closure. These measures, while significant, have not fully satisfied the grieving family of Agustín Cajtak, one of the victims.

The kidnapping was aimed at a mining entrepreneur from the district of El Porvenir; they were going to violently detain him and put him in a vehicle. They (the detainees) were going to pose as police in a fake operation and kidnap the businessman.

Marco Cajtak, Agustín's father, voiced his profound disappointment and anger, particularly regarding the absence of pre-trial detention for the accused. He highlighted concerns over the defense's strategy and what he described as an unacceptable four-month delay in receiving crucial toxicology results. The father's indignation was further fueled by the accused's demeanor during the legal proceedings, which he found deeply disrespectful.

Rafael Silva, the family's lawyer, emphasized the importance of the court's decision to immediately revoke the accused's driver's license. Silva stressed that such prohibitions are essential to safeguard the community from drivers who exhibit reckless behavior, especially those with positive alcohol test results. The case also involves a third vehicle, driven by a police officer with a positive alcohol test, whose car allegedly grazed one of the vehicles involved in the fatal impact. The initial lack of official reporting on this third vehicle has raised further questions about the transparency and thoroughness of the investigation.
