Uruguay hosted UN candidates forum, boosting regional standing

Uruguay successfully hosted a high-profile forum for Latin American candidates vying for the United Nations Secretary-General position, an event Foreign Minister Mario Lubetkin hailed as the best platform for positioning Uruguay on the world stage during the current period. The "Regional Dialogue on the Future Leadership of the United Nations" was organized with the strategic aim of increasing the likelihood of a Latin American candidate securing the top UN post.

While Uruguay championed the region's representation, it maintained neutrality regarding specific candidates. The initiative leveraged Uruguay's current role leading the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC). The forum generated significant international attention, with its "repercussion" noted in media outlets across Spain, Chile, Argentina, and Saudi Arabia, according to a press summary from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Lubetkin affirmed that Uruguay was "absolutely committed" to seeing a Latin American candidate win the election. Several prominent figures from the region are in contention, including María Fernanda Espinosa and Rebeca Grynspan from Ecuador and Costa Rica, respectively, former Chilean President Michelle Bachelet, Argentina's Rafael Grossi, and Guyana's Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett. Some regional powers have already declared their support, with Brazil and Mexico backing Bachelet, and Argentina endorsing Grossi.

The minister also emphasized the need to "reform" the UN. While the election date remains unannounced, Lubetkin stated that Uruguay would support its candidates when the time comes. He noted that the diversity of candidates does not signify weakness, encouraging each to campaign for votes. The event underscored Uruguay's diplomatic engagement and its ambition to play a more prominent role in international governance.
