Uruguay issues red alert for cyclone that caused one death

Uruguay has issued a red-level alert as an extratropical cyclone batters the country with powerful winds, potentially exceeding 120 kilometers per hour along the coast. The severe weather has already claimed one life and disrupted services for thousands.

The government is activating a national emergency operation along the coast, which will be in effect until early Friday morning. This measure includes significant limitations on movement, and state agencies are suspending all non-essential activities. Essential services like health, security, and meteorological monitoring will continue.

The cyclone's impact has been felt across several departments. In Cerro Largo, a man died after being struck by lightning. State power company UTE reported that 32,000 households are without electricity, with the most affected departments being Rivera, Paysandú, and Lavalleja. Fallen trees have also been reported.

Meteorological forecasts from the Uruguayan Institute of Meteorology prompted the alert, predicting persistent, strong winds and intense gusts. The National Emergency and Disaster Risk Reduction Board is scheduled to meet with government ministers to coordinate the response.
