Uruguay President Orsi Hopes to Unite Political Leaders Next Week

President Yamandú Orsi remains determined to bring together Uruguay's political party leaders, aiming for a crucial meeting next week despite recent setbacks. The original gathering, intended to project an image of national stability and consensus ahead of Orsi's participation in the UN General Assembly, was postponed at the request of the National Party's leader, Álvaro Delgado.

The postponement stemmed from significant political friction. The Broad Front had recently denounced "serious acts of apparent criminality" and "political responsibilities" in the process of purchasing offshore patrol vessels, specifically implicating former President Luis Lacalle Pou. This move generated considerable resentment among National Party members, who viewed the accusations as contradictory to Orsi's call for dialogue.

Senator Javier García expressed the party's frustration, stating, "In the morning they offend, attack, and accuse, and in the afternoon Orsi invites to 'high-level' dialogue." Despite this, Orsi plans to proceed, expressing hope that the meeting can occur as initially planned next week. He acknowledged being surprised by Delgado's request for postponement but emphasized his desire to convene as many leaders as possible.

Orsi's objective is to provide party leaders with a clear understanding of the current global landscape and the signals being received from international decision-makers. He intends to "collectivize" these insights and equip leaders with the tools to ensure a unified message from Uruguay on the international stage. The president stressed the importance of this collective understanding before his trip to the UN, where Uruguay's delegation typically engages in significant bilateral discussions with heads of state and potential investors.
