Uruguay Supreme Court Upholds Maximum Sentence for 2023 Femicide

Uruguay's Supreme Court of Justice has definitively confirmed the maximum sentence for the femicide of Natalia Lagos, who was murdered in 2023. The perpetrator, identified as her ex-partner and a former police officer, has been sentenced to 30 years in prison, along with an additional 15 years of security measures.

Natalia Lagos, 23, was killed by her ex-partner after she ended their approximately one-year relationship in July 2023. During their relationship, she had reported multiple instances of violence, harassment, and threats. Following the breakup, she continued to receive threats, leading her to be accompanied by family and friends at night for safety.

The fatal incident occurred in the early hours of August 2, 2023. The ex-partner forced his way into her home, where she was with a friend, Franco Aranda. He attacked Aranda before taking Lagos in Aranda's car. He then intentionally crashed the vehicle into a concrete barrier near a toll booth on Route 8, resulting in Natalia Lagos's death at the scene. Aranda survived his injuries, and the perpetrator sustained minor injuries.

The case highlights a pattern of domestic violence and escalating threats, culminating in a tragic femicide. The legal proceedings have now concluded with the highest possible sentence being upheld by the nation's highest court.
