US Awards Lockheed Martin $58.6 Billion Contract for Patriot Missiles

The U.S. Department of Defense has awarded Lockheed Martin a substantial $58.6 billion contract to produce PAC-3 missiles for the Patriot air defense system. This record-breaking deal, spanning seven years, is designed to triple the production of these critical interceptors.

Global conflicts have significantly depleted U.S. ammunition stockpiles, as large quantities of missiles have been supplied to allies and used in U.S. military operations. The new contract expands upon an initial $4.7 billion deal awarded in April, with the additional $53.86 billion covering the subsequent seven-year period.

The objective is to scale up the production of PAC-3 (Patriot Advanced Capability-3 MSE) missiles from approximately 600 per year to around 2,000 by 2030. Each missile costs roughly $4 million and is primarily used to neutralize ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and aircraft. Ukraine has been a consistent requester of these missiles due to their crucial role in defending against Russian aerial attacks.
