US Court Blocks Trump's Mail-In Voting Rules, Citing Chaos Risk

A U.S. Court of Appeals has upheld a lower court's decision to block significant parts of a regulation proposed by former President Donald Trump regarding mail-in voting. The appellate court's ruling stated that the new regulations could lead to chaos and disenfranchise numerous eligible voters if implemented. Specifically, the First Circuit Court of Appeals affirmed a June ruling by a federal court in Massachusetts that deemed crucial provisions of the regulation "unlawful, void, and ineffective." The judges expressed concern that the regulation "mandates an unprecedented level of federal official involvement in how states conduct elections." They warned that its implementation before upcoming congressional by-elections could "introduce chaos and threaten to disenfranchise many eligible voters." While one of the three judges partially agreed with the majority, he noted in a separate opinion that the case was "unusual" and that the regulation "threatens harm to the lawful electoral process." The New York Times highlighted that the U.S. Constitution grants states and Congress the authority to organize elections, not the executive branch. Despite this, Trump has actively campaigned against mail-in voting for years through executive orders and legislative initiatives, arguing it facilitates electoral fraud. The legal challenge originated from a lawsuit filed by over 20 Democratic state attorneys general against the regulation, which was issued in March. The presidential document proposed, among other things, that the Department of Homeland Security compile state lists of citizens for voter eligibility verification and involve the federal postal service in confirming voter data. Trump's legal team has announced the possibility of appealing the appellate court's decision to the U.S. Supreme Court.
