US Defense Department demands 21-day plans to boost weapons production and delivery

The U.S. Department of Defense has issued a stark directive to the defense industry, demanding accelerated production and delivery of armaments. A memo sent by Deputy Secretary Steve Feinberg, dated August 7, grants industry leaders a maximum of 21 days to present plans that will "significantly accelerate delivery timelines and/or increase production of critical capabilities."

The urgency stems from a recognized scarcity of certain weapons, which has reportedly caused friction between President Donald Trump and his Defense Secretary. Feinberg's memo explicitly states that "development cycles lasting years are not acceptable. We must drastically accelerate our timelines and expand our production capacity right now."

Several weapon programs are identified as critical and are under consideration for acceleration or increased acquisition during the fiscal year 2028 budget review. These include the "Next Generation Interceptor" missile defense program, the "National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System," an advanced air defense radar system, a pilot training system, and a space-based missile tracking system.

Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell confirmed the memo's authenticity, stating it will form the basis for the fiscal year 2028 budget proposal. He emphasized that direct collaboration with industry leaders to speed up production aligns with the administration's long-standing intention to rebuild the defense industrial base. The initiative aims to ensure the U.S. can meet its defense needs by bolstering manufacturing capacity and shortening lead times for essential military equipment.
