US deports thousands of Mexicans, but not to Mexico

The United States has expelled around 2,300 Mexicans this year, but instead of sending them back to Mexico, they have been deported to Guatemala, according to Reuters.

Guatemalan President Bernardo Arévalo announced this week that the expelled individuals are transferred to Mexico within 24 hours of arriving in Guatemala. He stated that either Mexico or the United States covers the travel expenses for these transfers.

Mexico's Foreign Ministry has strongly voiced its opposition to the U.S. practice of deporting Mexican citizens to other Latin American nations. Mexico is working to ensure its citizens are returned to Mexican soil and has not commented on the specific number of its nationals deported elsewhere.

Typically, deportees are sent directly to their country of origin. However, in some cases, individuals may be sent to a third country if their home country refuses to accept them or if the home country is deemed too dangerous. The U.S. has historically repatriated deportees directly to Mexico. The Trump administration, however, adopted a different approach within its strict anti-immigration policies, even when agreements for deportation existed between the U.S. and the deportee's home country.

According to Human Rights First representative Savi Arvey, the U.S. has been "systematically" deporting Mexicans to Honduras and Guatemala since May, with at least 200 Mexicans reportedly sent to Honduras. Honduras's Foreign Ministry denies receiving deported Mexicans. Experts suggest this strategy may aim to make returning to the U.S. more difficult.
