US envoy Kushner says many ideas were discussed in meeting with Putin

US presidential special envoy Jared Kushner said discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin included “many ideas that have not worked to date” as negotiators considered what might support a durable peace.

Speaking to journalists after talks in Kyiv, Kushner said fellow envoy Steve Witkoff had met Putin many more times than he had. He described Witkoff’s meeting with the Kremlin leader the previous day as “very constructive and substantive.”

Kushner said the discussion examined what Russia, Ukraine and the wider world might gain from a peace arrangement. “We really tried to think about what elements are needed for this durable peace that we have been talking about and what are the things Russia can gain from it, what are the things that Ukraine can gain from it, and what are the things that the world can gain from it,” he said.

He identified a return to a trilateral format as one potentially productive element. “We spoke with both parties, so hopefully we’ll have progress on this very soon,” Kushner said, adding that the envoys were putting forward new ideas that could prove useful.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the Kyiv talks included Ukraine, Witkoff, Kushner and national security advisers from France, the United Kingdom and Germany. He said the participants had agreed to meet again in the same format soon. Zelenskyy also said three rounds of talks on Sept. 6 focused on possible parameters for ending the war and short-term support for Ukraine.
