US forces kill 4 in Caribbean anti-drug operation; 227 dead in offensive

U.S. military forces have killed four individuals in the Caribbean Sea during an operation against a vessel suspected of drug smuggling. The incident, which occurred Tuesday, is part of a broader, months-long U.S. campaign against drug trafficking in Latin America.

This latest engagement represents the 68th attack in the U.S. military's anti-drug offensive, raising the total number of fatalities to at least 227 since the campaign began nearly a year ago. The U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) indicated that the operation targeted suspected drug traffickers operating along established smuggling routes. However, the military did not provide evidence that the vessel was carrying drugs at the time of the attack.

A video shared on social media platform X appeared to show a vessel in motion followed by a flash. This operation followed closely on the heels of another incident just two days prior, where U.S. forces killed two people aboard a suspected drug-smuggling vessel in the Pacific. That earlier engagement ended a pause of over two months in the U.S. campaign against suspected smugglers.

General Francis Donovan, head of SOUTHCOM, reiterated the command's commitment to disrupting and dismantling drug trafficking networks. "Joint Task Force Western Hemisphere continues executing precise, lethal operations against the cartels. We will hunt, disrupt, and defeat these narco-terrorist networks. SOUTHCOM is resolved to neutralizing cartel terror and violence throughout the region and into the U.S.," he stated in a post announcing the Sunday attack. The Trump administration is also pursuing agreements with Latin American countries to extend its anti-drug operations onto land, with reports of potential joint military operations against criminal groups in Colombia, Guatemala, and Honduras, though Guatemala has denied reaching such an agreement.
